Each state handles the taxing of medical equipment differently. However, nearly half of all states will not tax a stairlift if you receive a valid prescription from your doctor or healthcare professional confirming that your stairlift is for your own needs and will be of benefit to your health or mobility. There are other specific requirements state-by-state, so be sure to look into your local guidelines.
Unfortunately Medicare does not currently consider stairlifts to be a medial necessity and therefore they are not covered. There are however many other options available that may help you with your purchase, such as renting or purchasing a refurbished unit. There are various organizations that may be able to provide help or advice based on your personal needs, such as the Veteran’s Association, the American Legion or AARP.
